I wrote this song the day after my 8th and nearly final surgery of a very long journey of healing. I think the words speak for themselves. As often does the song. But it is about childhood trauma, of overcoming great challenge, of the song of our life ‘singing us’ long before we can hear it. It is about letting go, changing, allowing our identities and experiences to move as do all things and beings in nature.
Song been singing me
since before I knew to sing
the same song
since I was a child
for so long
I couldn’t hear it
I was scared
to even get near it
Let the truth speak
let your body breathe
let yourself change
like autumn trees
Let yourself let go
like the trees go to the ground
like we’ll
go to the ground
and see
everything’s always changing
for the better, for the strong
Bone to flesh
so many scars
but now I know myself
and the life I was given
And I won’t be too scared to sing
I won’t be too scared to accept this dream
of notes changing
and who I shall be
and this man
who knows the name of the wind
Let the truth speak
let your body breathe
let yourself change
like autumn trees
Let yourself let go
like the trees go to the ground
like we’ll
go to the ground
and see…
everything’s always changing
for the better, for the strong
